goVox digital voice recorder

No more phone numbers written on your hand!
The goVox by Landware rocks!  Even though it is a standalone device that just snaps on the Palm in place of the cover, it is very cool item that I found myself using every day.  The Palm has been sorely lacking in the voice recording area and the goVox fills this void rather well.

In the past, there's a good chance you may have seen me swerving around in traffic.  But not anymore!  I'm one of those people that is always writing down phone numbers that I hear on the radio while trying to drive at the same time.  With the goVox I don't have to do that anymore.
I always have my Palm within an arms reach, and now, thanks to Landware, I have digital voice recording with it!
As with all Landware products, the packaging is professional and a complete set of instructions are included with the device.  And yes, there is a set of batteries to get you up and recording right away.

One cover, two uses!
The goVox simply replaces the stock cover that comes with the Palm III series (and there's a model for the Palm V available at the end of April!) and functions both as a cover and as a recorder.  There are five clearly marked buttons along the bottom of the goVox that are used to operate the device.  Using it is straight forward enough, you simple press the record button, speak, then press it again when you are done.  You can listen to the recording by pressing the play button and you can move forward or backwards through the individual recordings by pressing the appropriate forward or back buttons.  To delete a recording, make sure you are at the correct one, then press the delete button.  Audible beeps let you know everything is working properly.
The goVox holds eight minutes of recording or 99 entries, whichever comes first.  The small pinhole on the upper left is the mic and the speaker can be seen in the upper right corner.  A handy graffiti reference is located on the inside of the cover.  The goVox is powered by 2 3 volt lithium button cells and last about 3 months.

The goVox doesn't add much thickness to the Palm, however it does add a bit of weight, which is most noticeable when you hold the Palm with the cover open for long periods.  You begin to feel it, but not that bad in my opinion.

The sound quality of the goVox is great.  I am able to record random thoughts, phone numbers and what not with the window down and the wind blowing and still be able to understand what I said.  One thing that would be nice is a digital display of what message number you are listening too.  It would make moving through messages and deleting them much easier.  All in all though, the goVox is a great add on for the Palm that has been long overdue.

The goVox is available from PalmGear and Landware for a list price of $54.95.  The Palm V model will cost $64.95 when available.  Check around because better prices are available.  I note that PalmGear offers it for $49.95.

What I like:
Voice recording in the Palm of your hand
Doesn't add much to the size of the Palm
Good sound quality

What I don't like:
Adds some weight to the Palm
Buttons can be accidentally pressed.
No way to tell what message you are listening to.
