Void by Giles Goddard
Houston, we have a winner!
Giles calls his website pdabusiness.com but he really should rename it to pdagames.com because he continues to put out some great games for the Palm! Void does for space trading, what TankPilot did for ground combat. It's a rich, full featured game that is rather simple in concept, but quite challenging to actually play.

Void is the perfect mix between arcade and strategy type games. You take the role of a space trader, traveling from planet to planet buying and selling your wares. Along the way you run into space pirates, police and other obstacles that you must either outwit, outrun or outgun.
A quick look to the left shows my front view with a ship just to the right of my targeting sight. The large round circle is the approaching planet. Shortly after this screen shot was taken that ship ceased to exist, and I had an extra credit in my account. |
Trade, Fight or Steal-That is the Question
To be a successful trader, you need to know where you are going, and the Galaxy Map is what you will consult before you make your jump into Hyperspace. Remember, you can only travel 10 light-years at a time, so don't get too ambitious in your travels. As you can see here, the planet Cieag is 91 light years away from my current location-much to far to travel in one shot. Travel in short hops, trade and scavenge and you will do just fine. If you choose to smuggle contraband, the payoff will be big, but the authorities will be tracking you down. |

Of course, if you are going to be a merchant, you've got to do some buying and selling. The Trade screen is where this is done. Once you successfully dock at the spaceport(easier said than done), you can begin trading in both legal and illegal items, depending upon what is available at any given location. Pay attention to where you are and where you have been to cash in on the best prices in the solar system!
Narcotics and DNA are considered contraband. You are free to choose your cargo and there's big bucks to be made as a smuggler. |
As you progress through the game, you gain rank and the ability to accept missions. This just adds to the already great gameplay. And oh yes, did I mention it's in color on the IIIc?
Void is available at Palmgear and costs $9.95
