JackFlash 1.1 by Brayder Technologies, Inc.

I have to be honest, I was a little concerned with messing around with my Palm's ROM.  I read some horror stories in the newsgroups, and I wasn't sure I felt comfortable playing with Flash memory.  I don't actually need it right now, so why play with fire.  Right?  I couldn't have been more wrong.  JackFlash is a breeze to use and takes the fear out of using your Flash ROM.

JackFlash by Brayder Technologies, Inc. comes in a zip file consisting of the PRC application, readme, changes and license text files, as well as an HTML manual.  The 52k PRC file is installed just like any other Palm application, and you can begin using JackFlash immediately.

When JackFlash is run, the program scans all applications, databases and hacks then determines which are safe to load into Flash ROM.  Basically, anything that doesn't modify itself can be loaded into Flash ROM. This means most applications, some reference type databases, as well as most hacks. You can set preference to show non-flashable apps and databases if you choose, but the default is to hide them. I see no reason to change this for most users.  Once a flashable list is generated, you simply decide if you want the app in RAM or Flash ROM. You also have the option of deleting apps in either RAM or Flash or beaming them to another user.

When you are finished, tap on update and within seconds the apps you have selected will be in Flash ROM, deleted or beamed. You can move apps in and out of Flash by repeating the procedure.   Another nice feature is that JackFlash automatically defrags Flash, so there is no need for a separate utility.

The HTML documentation and help files are very informative and easy to read.  Brayder Technologies and Sync Computing maintain an updated list of compatible applications where you can check any compatibility issues.  JackFlash works with Hackmaster and EVPlugBase.  You will need to update Hackmaster to use JackFlash.  It is available at the Brayder site.

One thing to note, databases and applications stored in Flash are not updated during a hotsync.  To update them, you need to move them to ROM, hotsync, then move them back.

JackFlash is an application no one should be without.  It's simple, works exactly as advertised, has excellent documentation and support, and most of all is affordable.

JackFlash is available at Handango and Palmgear for $24.95
NOTE:  As of 4/3/00, JackFlash is now $19.95 and is also available at smaller.com

What I like:
JackFlash is quick and simple but most of all SAFE
Ability to view available Flash and RAM memory
Cheaper than TRG Flashbuilder III
Flash is automatically defragged by JackFlash

What I don't like:
No way to have a copy in both Flash and ROM
